This level is designed for children who have little or some exposure to Chinese previously. Some younger children from Chopstix classes may be placed in this class. The primary goal of this level is to build a foundation for all four skills and some concepts regarding 4 tones. 80% of each class time should be dedicated to listening and speaking, 10% to reading and 10% to practice writing. Through songs, chants and fun activities and projects, students learn to communicate ideas that are relevant to their daily life in Chinese. Students will learn the fundamentals of Chinese characters, including basic strokes and stroke orders are introduced. Recognizing about 50 fundamental Chinese characters, copy and trace 25 of them, following commands, answering in longer phrases, telling people their names and age. Students will learn early childhood themes: family members, fruits, colors, zodiac animals etc.
