FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

What is the student population make-up of CLSC?

CLSC is open to everyone. Our students come from all backgrounds, as well: from Chinese American families, from multi-cultural families, children who were adopted from China, and many who have no connection to China at all, but want to learn her language and cultural traditions.

We don't speak Chinese at home, how will my child's learning be reinforced?

Most of our families don't speak Chinese at home!  We offer an interactive program with an emphasis on speaking in class. Homework consists of web site activities, dialogues with a "class buddy", sound wave recordings (to listen and practice speaking) and many other activities allowing students to practice what they've learned.

Can I sit in class with my child?

We encourage parents to sit in during Chopstix Toddler and Preschool classes, and parents are allowed to sit in Beginner 1 classes. However, as of Beginner 2 and we don't allow parents to sit in, because it often inhibits interactivity (many children don't participate as enthusiastically when a parent is in class). However, parents don't need to speak Chinese or sit in classes...independent learning fosters independence and makes children enthusiastic learners!

(Actually, many parents say their children are better learners when they are not in class with them!)

We don't speak Chinese at home, how will I help with homework?

You don't need to speak Chinese at home to help with homework. Our homework activities are age-appropriate and are designed to allow children to complete the exercises independently (some younger children may need help with pc-based activities or saving sound wave recordings).

Having children complete activities themselves helps foster independence and makes them enthusiastic learners. And, many chldren learn faster than adults!

I would still like to "keep up with" my child. How can I do that?

Parents are provided with a lesson plan at the beginning of each year, so they know what their children are covering for the year. We have regular parent/principal meetings that we encourage parents to attend.

We also provide web site access and weekly teacher email updates, so if you have any questions, please feel free to email the teacher. In addition, some parents choose to spend 15 minutes per week looking over their child's text book or checking out their web site or sound wave activities before the child does the homework (to stay ahead of their child!)

We have a very active Parents Committee, as well, which helps parents get together to discuss ways to best help their children learn Chinese as a second language and are always available as a resource.

Can my child start in the middle of the year?

We do not allow students to start after our regular programs have held more than one class, unless the child is assessed by our Principal, and has had some private tutoring to make sure she is at the appropriate level.

However, if your child is under 5, and would be registering for our Chopstix Toddler or Chopstix I or II class, he/she may be able to start later in the year if space is available (since the children are so young, the program is very flexible and interactive).
