We offer Chinese Mandarin language classes from pre-school to advanced, with additional adult classes as needed.
Our curriculum is based on an integrated approach to learning Chinese. Listening and speaking skills are emphasized early on, while reading and writing are introduced as each learner progresses.
Our units of study on activities related to daily life are age-appropriate, practical and relevant. Native speaking teachers combine discussion-based classroom instruction with experiential activities to engage students. Enrichment units on culture, history and traditions supplement language instruction. CLSC seeks to create an environment where students enjoy the process of learning. See Course Outline for class description.
Ample class time is devoted to students' communicative interaction in Chinese, providing opportunities to reinforce their listening and speaking skills. Hanyu Pinyin (a romanized phonetic system) is used as primary tool to facilitate learning. Supplemental materials, audio/visual aids are available. Proficiency and performance are assessed periodically.
Parental involvement is an integral part of making students' experience at CLSC a success. Parents are asked to help their children spend at least 15 to 20 minutes per day 3 times a week, or cumulatively one hour a week, to practice Chinese. This does not mean that parents need to know Chinese, but rather, they need to help their children set aside the time to review Chinese regularly.
We also encourage parents to be a partner of CLSC by sharing their time and talents with CLSC students. Throughout each year, various special activities and events that enrich students' experience at CLSC are organized by volunteer parents.
